Adoption Programs – Make A Difference
Adopt a Seahorse Programs
The Seahorse Hawaii Foundation currently has “The Worlds’ Largest Living Gene Bank of Endangered Seahorses”. We are now creating a living gene bank for the Sea Dragons and Decorative Reef Fish.
The Seahorse is an indicator species, and will only flourish in coastal reefs and sea grass beds that are free of agricultural, industrial and sewage run off. Therefore we can only release seahorses into marine protected areas with healthy flourishing coral gardens and sea grass beds. The Adopt a Seahorse Program is dedicated to releasing seahorses in Marine Protected Areas (MPA’s) in West Hawaii, Tavarua, Fiji and Vava u, Tonga.
Adopt a Leafy Seadragon Program
The goal of the “Adopt A Seadragon Program” is to successfully breed the Leafy Seadragon in captivity to prevent the capture of wild caught Leafy Dragons for display in public aquariums.
The Adopt A Seadragon Program focuses on the continued habitat improvement here at the Ocean Rider Seahorse farm for the leafy and weedy sea dragons. Our leafy Seadragons are in their habitat (tank) gifted to us by the Heidrich family. The offspring will be sold to public aquariums as an alternative to wild caught specimens preserving the wild sea dragon populations.
Adopt a Reef Fish Program
The goal of the “Adopt a Reef Fish Program” is to set up a breeding center for 20 of the most Decorative and threatened Reef Fish.
The Adopt a Reef Fish Program is to produce the first yellow tang in captivity to demonstrate that the farming of yellow tangs is a real alternative to the wild caught yellow tang fishery here in Kona.
We believe this project will make a significant impact in saving our ocean and protecting our coral reefs, the animals that live there, and the people that surf and swim there.
